Mayor, Question 5

Question 5:
The City recently released plans for Bus Rapid Transit and expressed interest in bringing a bike share program to New York City. As Mayor, would you promote the continuation and/or expansion of these public transit initiatives?
  • I support the general concept of BRT to make buses faster and more accessible. Practical solutions that keep traffic and people moving are great for this city. I think the bike share is an interesting idea, but I’d be concerned about how you implement such a plan and make it cost effective, so I’d like more details on that.

  • T. Technology: Finan09 plans to assemble Wind Turbines and High Mileage Vehicles in Northern Manhattan. We have vertical, silent, fully enclosed wind turbines that can be installed in all environments where there are 5 mph annual average winds and are capable of providing free green renewable sustainable electricity for an average home. They can also be installed on buildings to create Urban Wind farms. Both Solutions provide electricity generation at the point of usage, alleviating issues of transmission of the electricity. There is an additional application of the turbine in a high mileage vehicle 200 MPG, 400 Horse Power, 800 – 1000 Mile range with no plug in. We will assemble these technologies in Northern New York City as well as assembly and deployment in Upstate New York and Long Island.

  • I fully support expanding Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service, which is a big part of Moving NYC. Indeed, it is largely due to our work with the MTA that this long-discussed idea is becoming a reality. Now, along Fordham Road, Select Bus Service (SBS) has increased bus speeds by 19%, ridership has increased by 5,000 riders a day, and 98% of riders were satisfied or very satisfied with the new service. BRT is one of the best ways to meet critical bus service needs – making buses faster, more reliable, and more customer-friendly. On top of that, BRT is cost-effective, generating savings by improving bus speeds and attracting more customers. We are currently planning to work with the MTA to implement BRT in all 5 boroughs, including along 1st and 2nd avenues in Manhattan, providing needed congestion-relief years before the long-awaited Second Avenue Subway makes its first run.

Similarly, we intend to continue exploring bike-share programs, as recommended by our “Bike-Share Opportunities in New York City” report released this year. Bike-share programs are ideal for densely populated cities like New York. Almost 50% of New York’s workforce lives within a reasonable bicycling distance of their place of work. Bike-shares also offer immediate transportation solutions, as they can be built, installed and open for business in months, not years. Bike-share programs offer options for economic growth and job creation, as well as providing considerable health and environmental benefits.

  • I strongly support a speedy expansion of a New York Bus Rapid Transit network, including on Manhattan’s First and Second avenues.

I am particularly impressed by the thoughtful proposals of the Pratt Center for Sustainable Development, which would open up new neighborhood-to-work corridors throughout the City, especially for economically disadvantaged communities. I will use these as an important guide for the implementation of BRT.

At the same time, BRT may be a useful way to respond to population growth in other communities poorly served by the current transportation network. I also see BRT as a wise use of stimulus funding if additional federal money is allocated.

I will look at all ideas to increase bicycle ridership, including a bike share program.
